HVACR Apprenticeship

The PHCC Academy® HVACR Apprenticeship is designed to provide a working knowledge of the latest tools, equipment, and technologies for an HVACR technician to successfully fulfill their roles at a licensed contractor shop.

It provides superior hands-on information needed to successfully maintain and troubleshoot today's complex heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. The program fosters a solid foundation and understanding of environmental problems and their solutions, and displays a depth of theory, diagnostics, and repair procedures.

Yearly Course Overview

HVAC YEAR 1: HVACR introduction to systems and major components; Introduction to electricity and
thermodynamics; Basic refrigeration cycle and scheduled maintenance; Systemic problem solving; Basic installation and repair methods; Energy efficient installations; and excellence in customer service.

HVAC YEAR 2: Refrigeration cycle review; compressors; Refrigerants, lubrication, condensers and accessories; Metering devices. Evaporators; Evacuation and charging procedures; Heating; Electrical troubleshooting; Motors and cooling equipment; Mechanical troubleshooting; Advanced installation; Control systems, psychometrics and basic sizing.

HVAC YEAR 3: Servicing and troubleshooting systems; Testing, Adjusting and Balancing (TAB); Energy-Efficient mechanical systems; Fluid handling systems; applied electrical and refrigeration system problem solving; Psychometric chart troubleshooting; Cooling towers and evaporative condensers;
Commercial air conditioning and refrigeration systems; Water treatment and indoor quality.

HVAC YEAR 4: Heat Pumps; Reverse cycles; Outdoor and indoor coils; Motors, compressors, defrosts, thermostats and electrical schematics; ASHP installation, maintenance and troubleshooting;
System sizing and design; heat pump types and configurations; Energy and efficiency calculations.

Each course is the equivalent of one year of classroom instruction or 144 hours, and may take up to four years to complete.

HVACR Apprenticeship Core Curriculum
The PHCCWA Academy follows the PHCC National Educational Foundation's four-year series of HVACR textbooks (included in course fee), which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor. Office of Apprenticeship, the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), and Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES).

The series is regularly updated by contractors, educators and industry experts, delivering the practical information needed to meet workforce training needs of our industry. E-books are included
HVACR 101 w/each course and a hard copy may be available upon request.

All program course fee payments are due upon enrollment. Due to the nature of our training environment and upfront obligations to our learning partners, all course fee payments are non-refundable.

Open enrollment all year long - apprentices can start at any time. The self-paced program is typically completed in 9-12 months. One course per year for students new to the trade. Apprentices with more motivation and previous OJT experience may move through the program at a faster pace.

Enroll with or without U.S. Department of Labor requirements. For employers with a DOL program in place we will fulfill the RTI requirement only. Employer will handle DOL registration. For employers who do not have a DOL sponsor program in place, PHCC can register apprentices.

Supervisor access to the platform if requested. Course fee includes student textbook for each year enrolled.

Course Fee is non-refundable. The student has 12 months to complete each course. If the course is not completed in the time given 6-month extensions are available for a fee. It is the student's responsibility to contact the program admin if an extension is needed. If the course is abandoned after expiration with no communication from the student, the course will be deleted, and all work will be lost. The student may re-enroll at the current cost of the course. This is a go-at-your-own-pace course, and it is up to the student to stay on track or communicate any issues or concerns.
