Plumbing & HVAC Workforce Readiness

The PHCC Academy® Plumbing and HVAC Workforce Readiness Course provides individuals with an introduction to working in the plumbing-heating-cooling industry.

The course is perfect for high school students making decisions about careers in construction, individuals changing careers, office staff who need more industry knowledge and new employees
working for wholesalers.

During this six-module course, participants will learn what is required to pursue a career in the industry as well as key skills and techniques to help them succeed.

This course is offered online through the PHCC Academy®. It was created by the PHCC Educational Foundation, and developed by Adam Manley, PhD., Associate Professor of Career and Technical Education at Western Michigan University.

Students must complete the course in 60 days.

Course Modules

• Module 1: Foundations - Introduction to the Trades
  • Demand for workers, Average Salaries, Career Ladder, What plumbing & HVAC techs do, Work environment, Educational Requirements for Entering the Trades, Licenses and Certifications, Essential skills, Business Skills, Customers Service Skills, Mechanical Skills, Physical Strength, Troubleshooting Skills, Time Management Skills, Job outlook, History of the Trades
• Module 2: Soft Skills
  • Appearance, Communication Skills, Teamwork Skills, Time management Skills, Problem- solving/Troubleshooting, Skils, Negotiation Skils, Work Ethic, Employer Expectations
• Module 3: Numbers
  • Integers, Labeling, Fractions, Mixed Numbers, Decimals, Changing Feet and Inches to Decimals, Scale Rulers
• Module 4: Tools
  • Tools - Hand tools used in plumbing and HVAC, Common power tools
• Module 5: Safety
  • Hand and Power Tool Safety, General Jobsite Safety, Fire Prevention, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Material Handling, Excavation Safety, Electrical Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Ladder Safety, Scaffolding Safety, Motor Vehicles and Heavy Equipment Safety
• Module 6: Drawings
  • Introduction to Construction Drawings (Plumbing): Scale Rulers, CAD Drawing, Product (Mechanical) Drawings, Construction (architectural) Plans, Plumbing Symbols, Drawing Projections.
  • Introduction to Construction Drawings (HVAC): Scale Rulers, CAD Drawing, Electrical Symbols, Schematic Diagrams, Pictorial Diagrams, Point-to-Point Diagrams

Upon course completion, a certificate is issued.
